Reductive change

If you took a look at my desk, you wouldn’t think I’m a minimalist. Vitamins, notebooks, at least three drinking vessels, remotes, hand lotion, random seashells, Sharpies in every color…

But, that’s not how I like software to look or feel.

When building a UI, it can be tempting to try to accommodate every edge case, like “Hey look, we thought of EVERYTHING!” But chances are that UI ships and those extra knobs and levers never do much else but bear explaining to new users.

Too often there’s a hyper-focus on adding more features, but we should also think about sunsetting features that are rarely used, buggy, or expensive to maintain — particularly if they don’t provide much value.
